NEW YORK, Dec. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- From forward-looking concepts for the Chanel shopping experience in 2012 to a luxury internet site for Bulgari, students from Columbia Business School and Parsons The New School of Design recently marked a semester-long seminar in which teams examined case studies to develop concepts for some of the world's leading luxury goods companies. The course, "Design and Marketing of Luxury Goods," featured projects for Faber-Castell, Lladro, LVMH Perfumes and Cosmetics, and Saks Fifth Avenue, in addition to Bulgari and Chanel. The class functions as an incubator for new ideas for participating companies, not solely for product development but also for enhancing their customer base. This year's projects included increasing brand visibility in the U.S.
Philadelphia University Fashion Design Student Awarded $25,000 YMA ...
Casey Saccomanno, a senior fashion design major, was awarded one of the first $25,000 Geoffrey Beene National Scholarships Jan. 9 at the YMA Geoffrey Beene Fashion Scholarship Dinner in New York. "This is a huge award, a huge honor," said Saccomanno, who was one of four student winners announced at the dinner. The other winners were from Rhode Island School of Design, Parsons The New School for Design and the University of Colorado, Boulder. "This is truly a great accomplishment for Casey to be recognized at this major industry event and for the University to be recognized as a preeminent institution for educating the future leaders of the industry," said Clara Henry, director of the university's Fashion Design program. In addition to the $25,000 award, Saccomanno and two other Philadelphia University fashion design students, Janelle Frank and Sandra Huffaker, won YMA scholarships of $5,000 each, which had been previously announced.

Right out of college, she and a group of Chicago friends started Steppenwolf Theatre, which grew into one of America's most distinguished companies. Kerry Hart: The danger of interdisciplinary arts education
Wouldn't it be great if we could read a couple of books on brain surgery and be ready to perform an operation? In arts education, that is the type of miraculous feat we often expect from our teachers. Every academic discipline requires a unique intellectual function — from quantitative reasoning to philosophical inquiry. The arts are no different. Dance requires a physical-kinesthetic brain function; music requires an auditory function; visual art requires a visual-spacial brain function; and drama incorporates a combination of several, including the verbal-linguistic function that is important to the literary arts. The college and university curriculum in each arts discipline is rigorous and, indeed, it takes a lifetime to acquire mastery in one subject area. Yet when it comes to teaching students who do not have a background in any of the arts, we create interdisciplinary arts courses that provide a superficial overview — usually from a historical perspective.
